June 6, 2008

On June 5, 2008, Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor at the International Criminal Court, issued a statement [2] to the United Nations Security Council accusing the Sudanese government of contributing to acts of genocide. For more information about international reaction to Ocampo's statement, refer to the article "Prosecutor accuses Sudanese state of Darfur crimes [3]," and for the UN's response to Ocampo's statement refer to the UN News Centre press release, "Ban urges Sudan to cooperate with prosecutors probing Darfur war crimes [4]."

Discussion Questions
  • What evidence of genocide does Ocampo refer to in this report? Who are the perpetrators of these crimes?
  • Who is responsible for protecting civilians when their own government is accused of committing acts of genocide?
  • What is the purpose of the International Criminal Court? What role does it play in stopping and preventing genocide?
